Spurs release troublesome striker

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed this morning that they have released Emmanuel Adebayor from the remainder of his contract.

The 31-year-old has been exiled from Mauricio Pochettino’s first team this season and was not given a squad number by the club as they were desperate to offload the Togo international.

The forward held talks with West Ham United about a move to Upton Park, but rumours suggested that Adebayor, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the current season, would only leave White Hart Lane if Spurs paid up the rest of his contract in full, worth around £5 million.

Spurs announced the news on Twitter, but did not specify the terms of his release, saying: “We can confirm that we’ve reached a mutual agreement with Emmanuel Adebayor which will see him released from his contract with the Club.

“We wish Emmanuel well for the future”.

Signed on a permanent deal from Manchester City in 2012 after impressing on a loan spell, the powerful forward has found his time at Spurs difficult, failing to find regular form under the likes of Andre Villas-Boas, Tim Sherwood and now Pochettino.

He hadn’t been included in any of Tottenham’s matchday squads this season as the club struggled to find a buyer for his services and his last appearance came as a substitute against former club City in May 2015.
