Match Report: Fiorentina 1-1 Tottenham

A Nacer Chadli penalty wasn’t enough to give Spurs the victory in Florence, as a deflected strike from Bernardeshci looped over Vorm and meant the game ended as a draw.

The first half saw Tottenham have the majority of possession, but failing to do anything significant with it, whilst Dele Alli picked up a yellow for a cynical foul on Tomovic. Zarate then had a good chance to put Fiorentina ahead, before Ben Davies was brought down in the box which resulted in the referee awarding Spurs a penalty. Nacer Chadli stepped up and fired the ball home from the spot to give Spurs the lead going into the break.

Tottenham had the ball in the back of the net early in the second half too, but Son’s effort from Christian Eriksen’s free-kick was correctly ruled out for offside. However, Fiorentina were soon level, after Bernardeschi’s deflected effort looped over Vorm and into the back of the net. Spurs probed for an equalizer and brought on Harry Kane with a little over 20 minutes to go, but couldn’t find a way through the resolute Fiorentina defence.

The result and the away goal give Spurs the advantage for the return leg at White Hart Lane next Thursday, will they be able to progress to the round of 16?
