Vertonghen Won’t Face a Ban Following Incident at St.Mary’s

Tottenham defender, Jan Vertonghen will not face disciplinary action from the FA after images showed that he appeared to scratch Southampton striker, Jay Rodriguez in a tussle that occurred in their 4-1 win at St.Mary’s on Wednesday night.

The Belgian centre-back appeared to catch the Southampton player in the seventeenth minute when completing a clearance, action that the match officials didn’t notice.

Referee Mike Dean didn’t see the incident and neither did any of his officials and some replays show that a red card could’ve been an outcome for the defender.

Vertonghen was however shown a yellow card by Mike Dean, his fifth of the campaign, meaning that the Belgium international will miss Tottenham’s game against Watford on New Year’s Day.

There were worries among fans and the club over action being taken by the Football Association over the incident but it has been stated that none will be taken.

Video replay does show that there was contact made between the two players and a scratching motion on Rodriguez’s face by Vertonghen was made.

The video evidence has been viewed by officials and the final solution is that further action won’t be taken against the Spurs defender even though he already must face a ban for five bookings this term.
