Fabrizio Romano delivers ‘here we go’ for Tottenham transfer target
  • Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a move for Samuel Martinez
  • Young midfielder has now agreed a deal to join Liverpool
  • Colombian has drawn comparisons with Brazilian great Kaka

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a host of players since Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival.

And now, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Samuel Martinez, one of the players they had on their radar, is actually on his way to Liverpool.

The Lilywhites will be in the market to fine-tune their squad as they are in desperate need of surgery.

Their youth strategy was set to continue with the arrival of Martinez, but they will now have to look elsewhere.

Samuel Martinez to join Liverpool

The youngster isn’t a household name in world football, but scouts across the planet clearly seem to rate him highly.

Earlier this year, we reported that Tottenham wanted to sign Martinez, with Bayern Munich also believed to be in the race.

But now, Romano has delivered the ‘here we go,’ with Martinez instead heading to Liverpool.

The Reds have moved quickly to secure the services of the young attacking midfielder after anticipating interest from clubs across the continent.

Martinez has been likened to Kaka and will only join Liverpool in 2027, as confirmed by the Italian journalist.

In terms of his profile, the 17-year-old is an attacking midfielder but is also capable of playing in a deeper role.

Despite being a teenager, he’s 184 cms tall, which is almost unheard of for an attacking midfielder.

Martinez has made six appearances for the Colombia U-17s but has yet to score for them.

No transfer fee has been mentioned yet, but considering the level of interest in Martinez, Atletico Nacional are unlikely to have parted with him on a cut-price deal.

Tottenham need signings for the present

If Liverpool, Bayern Munich and a host of clubs look at a player, it goes without saying that he is talented.

However, Tottenham won’t lose too much sleep over missing out on Martinez as they need players who can come straight into the squad and make an impact.

That said, their youth strategy has paid dividends in recent seasons, with the likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Luka Vuskovic showing their class.

Even if they had signed Martinez, he would have likely joined in 2027, which makes no difference to their current squad.

Tottenham need to focus on the present and De Zerbi will already have one eye on potential reinforcements as they prepare to enter an important transfer window.

However, all their focus at the moment will be to avoid defeat against Everton on Sunday, a result that would confirm their Premier League status.
